What happens during a new boiler installation?
A boiler replacement is often described as a straightforward swap, but the work behind a reliable installation starts before the old appliance is disconnected. The way your home is heated, the condition of the existing pipework, the boiler position and your hot water requirements all affect how the installation is planned.

1. We assess the existing heating system
Before recommending a boiler, we look at the system already serving your home. This includes the type of boiler, the hot water arrangement, the location of the appliance and the route taken by the heating and hot water pipework.
A replacement in the same position may be relatively contained if the existing layout is suitable. However, changing from one type of system to another can involve much more than fitting a different appliance. A combi boiler, system boiler and regular boiler operate in different ways, so the choice affects hot water storage, cylinder requirements, controls and available space.
We also consider how the property is used. A home with one bathroom and modest hot water demand has different priorities from a larger household using several outlets. The right recommendation is not simply the boiler with the highest output. It needs to suit the heat demand, hot water demand and practical limitations of the property.
2. We plan the installation around the property
Once the system has been assessed, the installation needs to be planned carefully. The boiler position, the route for its exhaust and condensation pipes, access for servicing and the condition of nearby pipework all influence the work.
This is where older properties can need particular attention. Existing pipework may require alterations to suit the new boiler, while the route to a suitable drain may affect where the appliance can be installed. 3. The old boiler is isolated and removed
The existing appliance is safely isolated before it is taken out. Gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with the relevant connections and system components dealt with in the correct order.
Removing the old boiler can reveal issues that were hidden while it was in place. These may include unsuitable connections, deteriorated sections of pipework or an installation that does not match the requirements of the replacement appliance. Those points need to be addressed rather than covered up by the new boiler.
We remove the old unit as part of the installation and arrange its responsible disposal. The surrounding area is kept as tidy as possible, although the amount of disturbance depends on the boiler position and whether pipework or controls need to change.
4. We connect, flush and set up the new system
The new boiler is fitted to the planned position and connected to the heating, hot water, gas and electrical systems, plus the pipe that carries away condensation, as required. Any alterations to the pipework are completed at this stage.
Cleaning the heating system is an important part of the process when the existing system needs it. Sludge and debris can reduce circulation and affect components within a new boiler. Cleaning the system helps the replacement appliance operate with the water flow it was designed for, rather than leaving contamination in place.
Controls are also fitted or connected according to the agreed system design. This may include modern smart controls where appropriate. Controls are not an optional decoration around the boiler. They determine how the system responds to demand and how easily you can manage heating and hot water in everyday use.
5. We commission the boiler and explain the result
Fitting the appliance is not the final step. We carry out safety checks and test and set up the boiler so its operation is verified rather than assumed. This includes checking the installation, confirming safe operation and ensuring the system is working as intended.
We then explain the controls and basic operation to you. A boiler can be correctly installed but poorly understood, especially when the controls are different from those on the old system. Knowing how to set heating and hot water demand helps you use the system properly and identify unusual behaviour sooner.

Why installation time varies between homes
The main difference is rarely the physical size of the boiler. It is the amount of work needed around it. A replacement that stays in the same position and uses suitable existing connections is different from a system upgrade, a boiler relocation or an installation requiring pipework alterations.
Property layout, access, the existing heating system, hot water demand and the condition of the infrastructure all make a difference. That is why a proper survey is more useful than relying on a standard installation timetable.
